The development of Rhoda Goldman Plaza culminated more than a decade of work within San Francisco’s Jewish Community to co-locate the headquarters of the Jewish Family & Children’s Services (JFCS) with a new assisted living community for seniors on property contributed jointly by JFCS and the Mt. Zion Health Fund at the corners of Post and Scott Streets.
In 1997, the two organizations, working with local developer Holliday Development, were preparing to submit entitlement plans to the city, hoping to begin construction the following year. Under contract with Holliday Development, Ben Golvin managed all aspects of the day-to-day development, design and construction process, coordinating the work of the design team, general contractor, interior designer, financing consultant, management company and the owner’s Board and staff.
Both components of the building were completed on time in 2000, and RCFE licensing obtained in time for the scheduled opening.
The ambitious program for this complex building involved the adaptive re-use of the historic brick JFCS building and its integration with the newly-constructed 7-story concrete structure housing both the residential units (including a dedicated memory care facility on one story) and the 30,000 square foot JFCS administrative headquarters.
