Downtown Berkeley YMCA

The Downtown Berkeley YMCA combines a state-of-the art health & wellness facility with the historic and friendly environment that members have appreciated for more than 100 years. The facility is comprised of three separate buildings- built in 1910, 1960, and 1994- which are artfully interconnected to provide fitness facilities, community facilities, staff offices, and 80 SRO hotel rooms. 

ECB provided project management services for the complex seismic retrofit, expansion, and renovation of the facility with carefully phased construction while the facility remained fully operational during construction. The project received a Berkeley Architectural Heritage Association award for excellence in historic preservation of the historic 1910 building exterior.

ECB worked closely with YMCA staff to ensure that construction did not impede day-to-day operations of the Y and that members continued to receive quality benefits and services throughout the construction period. The upgraded facility incorporates daylighting, new energy efficient lighting and HVAC, sustainable materials, and improved water efficiency. The project achieved a LEED Gold rating.
