Strand Theater: ACT’s sublime oasis on Market Street

San Francisco, CA: Equity Community Builders was the project manager and financial consultant on this project for ACT, to restore the historic Strand Theater on Market Street.

In his article in the San Francisco Chronicle, John King highlights the sound choices made by the design team who turned the newly renovated Strand Theater into a “sublime oasis on Market Street,” amid the rough surrounding neighborhood.

“The idea from the very beginning was to engage with Market Street, but also create a place apart,” said Michael Duncan of Skidmore Owings & Merrill, the firm that restored the Strand.

ECB’s project management and financing expertise helped transform the blighted abandoned building into a vibrant 280-seat performing arts theater and 120-seat black box theater, plus support spaces and a ground floor café.

The completion of the renovated Strand Theater now allows ACT to expand artistic and educational outreach programs to the local community.

For two decades ECB has demonstrated its commitment to responsibly developing buildings and creating great places that contribute to the vitality of neighborhoods and help strengthen communities. We aim to provide affordable housing at all points on the income spectrum; to apply adaptive re-use strategies of historic structures; and to develop centers for non-profit innovation.
